Well, let me start with a little history about how Sweet potato pie is a holiday staple in African American and Southern homes. … It became an African cuisine tradition brought to the United States by slaves, who made it using sweet potatoes and yams, a plant native to Africa instead of pumpkin. “In the early 20th century, George Washington Carver, an Inventor, a black scientist, had developed more than 100 uses for sweet potatoes, which included postage stamp glue and synthetic rubber. George Washington Carver also came up with his recipe for sweet potato pie, which featured sliced rounds instead of the typical mash. His research and push to black farmers helped popularize the vegetable, and recipes began to circulate in books and periodicals across the country’. Today, it is common to see sweet potato pies in black and Southern households to celebrate family reunions, special occasions, and holidays, particularly Thanksgiving. Below is a chart that shows how our States are divided into Sweet Potato lovers and Pumpkin Lovers.

So, as we all can see, the South loves them some Sweet Potato Pies, all other states Love Pumpkin Pies. But for my preference, I am going with the Sweet Potato Pie for the win. I used to live in the South, and Sweet Potato Pies is consumed all year round. It’s on every menu in your Soul Food Restaurant. I knew you guys remember the Pattie Labelle Sweet Potato pie wave a couple of years ago; well, I am telling you her store box pie has nothing on my Pie. Trust me. My secret ingredient is apple spice. This spice makes my Sweet Potato pie a little more special. Follow my recipe for this must-have easy to make dessert. Great for the holiday, Sunday Dinner, or if you want a nice warm pie for your sweet craving. So, lets get started on making this amazing Pie. For this recipe I did not make my own pie dough from scratch, I purchased the store brought Marie Callender’s Frozen Pie Crusts. I love this brand because they have the best deep-dish Pie Crust. When it’s the Holiday season, I usually make my dough, but I didn’t have all the extra time over the weekend.

Helpful tip: When cooking your pie for 55 minutes, sometimes your crust can overcook; I recommend using a

. You can order for less than ten bucks from amazon.com. For the first 20 minutes, cook it with the shied around the crust.

Ingredients:

4 cups of baked sweet potatoes (I use 4 large Potatoes)

2 cups of white sugar

1 Cup of Brown Sugar

1 sticks butter (melted)

3 eggs (Room Temperature)

1 cups of milk

2 tbsp. lemon juice

1 tbsp. vanilla extract

½ tbsp. lemon extract

¼ tsp. nutmeg 

¼ tsp. allspice 

¼ tsp. cinnamon 

¼ Apple Pie Spice

1 tsp. salt

6 tbsp. flour

2 pre-made pie shells (deep dish)

Directions:

Step 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Step 2. Than, you want to bake your sweet potato in the oven

Step 3. Baked sweet potato for 45-60 minutes on 400 degrees

Step 4. Melt Butter in a pot over Medium

Step 5. Mix your flour and milk together in a bowl

step 6. Puree your cooked sweet potatoes in a mixer or blender until smooth

Step 7. In your mixer add your pureed sweet potatoes, butter, spices, sugar eggs and flour and milk mixer.

Pour into Pie Crust

Bake for 55 minutes

After baking your pie, let it cool completely for 2 to 4 hours. Loosely cover the pie with aluminum foil before refrigerating for up to 4 days.

If you want to save some Dessert for later Wrap the cooled sweet potatoes in foil and freeze them whole in freezer bags for up to 12 months.
